2nd-5th grade tEAM TEACHING

Meet the Teachers

Co-Teacher, Mrs. Sheryl

Sheryl is teaching science and math for the 2nd- 5th grades.

I am looking forward to another year teaching at Hope Academy!  I have a BA in Psychology from New College of Florida and a MA in Teaching from Columbia International University.  All of my teaching experience has been in multi-age classrooms which allow me to differentiate the instruction to the needs of students.  I enjoy making learning hands-on, relevant and personal for each child.  Our classroom is rarely quiet as we conduct experiments, work in small groups, and find new ways to “show off our learning.”  You’ll see that learning is an active, and not passive, experience in our classroom.

I am married to Robert and have two sons, Evan and Sean.  When not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family and pets (2 dogs and 2 cats at last count), gardening, reading, hiking, and cooking.

Co-Teacher, Mrs. Lindsay

Lindsay is teaching Language Arts and Social Studies.

Lindsay started teaching at Hope Academy in 2014 and is excited to be part of the Hope family! She is originally from Colorado, where she received her Elementary and Special Education teaching credentials from the University of Colorado Denver after completing my BA at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, IA. She is currently  finishing her M.A. from the University of Denver. While she was working on her graduate coursework, she spent two years as the Special Services Leader for an Aurora, CO elementary school, working on social and academic skills with students over the summer and before and after school. It was there that she fell in love with teaching. She spent the 2013-2014 school year in a multi-age classroom (grades 5-8) in Colorado Springs, teaching special education in a "turn-around" school as corps member for Teach for America, Colorado.

Lindsay is dedicated to creating a classroom culture that emphasizes the "big C's": curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity. Her goal is to encourage students to find connections between different academic subjects and be able to apply their knowledge to their everyday lives, setting a foundation for a life-long love of learning and intellectual confidence. The highlight of the AC 3-5 year is the "Genius Hour" projects. Inspired by a practice at Google, students are given 1 hour a week to research a topic of their choice (past topics have ranged from "How to Take and Edit Photographs" to "Mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle" to "Space Exploration: to the Moon, Mars and More" and "How to Build Darth Maul's Head out of Legos" . After 4 months of work, they then present their project to the school and to their parents in a "TED Talk".

When she is not teaching, Lindsay enjoys spending time with her husband, Todd, their cat, Schubert, and dog, Mélisande. Her hobbies include singing and studying opera, dancing, baking, cheesy science fiction television shows and movies, absorbing everything "nerdy" she can get her hands on, reading, and creative writing.

Assistant Teacher, Mrs. Bettye

Ms. Bettye is teaching Language Arts and Social Studies.

Mrs. Bettye has been a teacher for 21 years and at Hope Academy since 2005. Bettye leads the 4th grade Social Studies learning and most enjoys the Colonial Days she celebrates with the students. She is an active member of Advent United Methodist Church and the Rose Hammond Circle.  Bettye is an alumnus of UNC-Greensboro and received her M.Ed at Georgia State University.

Hope Academy is a thriving, loving, caring environment for the families we welcome.  It is a true joy for me teach these children while I establish and execute the appropriate learning style for my classes.  For my classes, it is my goal to promote a love for learning in each child and it is my personal hope that the style identified will direct and assist in accomplishing that goal.  As the classroom teacher, I am truly motivated by the enthusiasm, energy, and excitement exhibited by the students as each one progresses.

In her free time, she enjoys travel, reading, and baking.  Bettye is married to Alan and they have two adult children, Andrew and Amanda. She is very excited about the arrival of her first grandchild in September.
