In addition to the inclusion-based classrooms of Hope Academy, Project HOPE is developing several Hope Alive classrooms that will focus on children on the autism spectrum. For many of these children, the traditional school programs are unsuccessful. Those students with autism who have higher academic skills are often so overwhelmed by the social demands of a mainstream school setting that their academic abilities are undermined. On the other hand, their academic needs are often not met in traditional self-contained classes. Finding an appropriate placement is often difficult in traditional classes since many children with autism are able to progress well in one particular subject but not in others
The Hope Alive classrooms will use self-paced virtual curriculum on computer facilitated by a Hope Alive teacher. This classroom model will augment academic curriculum with direct instruction in life skills and social interaction.
